A visit to Africa, as he calls it. Hans Christian Andersen is staying with the British ambassador and his Danish wife, in a beautiful coastal mansion. One late afternoon, he sits on the terrace, with a swarm of fishing boats dotting the Strait of Gibraltar in the background, and enjoys a Cuban cigar, a true Havana. The smoke dissolves into the still, warm air. From that smoke, a miniature fairy tale begins to take shape: "In Cuba stood black girls, cutting tobacco plants; their eyes glittered like stars, but the eyes of the youngest among them glittered more than the rest. She was a king's daughter from hot Africa, now a slave in a large West India island. There fell a tear on the leaf she had just cut from the tobacco plant; there is a soul in a tear; a soul can never die, and this contained the memories of her childhood, longing, and regret. The leaf was rolled up, -the brown mummy was called a good cigar. In this first part of ‘Dalum Kirke revisited’, the overall focus was on church music and hymns. Hymns and music are an important part of Dalum Church’s identity, and during the concert the audience was presented with a selection of older and lesser-known hymn melodies performed in various experimental arrangements. Danish ensemble [Via Artis Konsort](https://musica.nu) staged the site-responsive event ‘Hesbjerg revisited’ in September 2017 as part of the Funen cultural festival *Mod.Strøm*. The festival aimed to bring new attention to forgotten places on the island of Funen through various artistic initiatives. We selected the abandoned [Hesbjerg Castle](https://hesbjergslot.dk/), west of Odense, Denmark - a ‘Sleeping Beauty’ castle built in 1890 in an anachronistic renaissance style with a tumultuous but intriguing history. In the months leading up to the festival, the ensemble’s composer and dramaturg created a performance incorporating elements from the castle’s past and present, inspired by its appearance, picturesquely dilapidated condition, and unique acoustic properties. The castle’s park-like garden was also integrated into the preparation. This resulted in a 70-minute musical-dramatic suite, performed by Via Artis Konsort in collaboration with the Modern Circus group TinCanCompany and Odense Chamber Choir. Music and circus performances took place throughout several castle rooms and the garden. The audience followed a carefully planned route to experience the full performance. As part of the event, we encouraged audience members to film their impressions with cell phones or small cameras. Over the following months, we collected these film clips, which professional filmmakers then compiled into a patchwork video.
